Clarification from PSA on PDMA Report: Solar Structures Not Primary Cause of Storm-Related Fatalities
The Pakistan Solar Association (PSA) expresses deep sorrow over the tragic loss of 14 lives and injuries to over 100 individuals caused by the severe thunderstorm and heavy rains that struck various districts of Punjab on May 24–25, 2025. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims, and we stand in solidarity with the affected communities during this difficult time.
However, PSA strongly objects to the misleading impression created by a recent news report citing a PDMA Punjab official, suggesting that “structural collapses caused by solar panels” were linked to most fatalities. This statement is factually incorrect and contradicted by PDMA Punjab’s own official report, issued on May 25, 2025 at 11:30 AM.
According to the PDMA document, the majority of deaths and injuries occurred due to causes such as:
Wall collapses due to thunderstorms
Roof and shed collapses due to strong winds
Falling trees, skylight failures, and road traffic accidents (RTAs)
Only one incident in Jhelum refers to a solar panel along with a wall collapse as a contributing factor. This clearly indicates that solar-related structural issues were not the primary cause of fatalities, and the data must be read with responsibility and accuracy.
Mr. Waqas Moosa, Chairman PSA, stated:“It is extremely unfortunate that solar systems are being singled out without context, especially when PDMA’s own report attributes the majority of damage and loss of life to weather-related structural failures unrelated to solar infrastructure. Such narratives risk misleading the public and damaging trust in a sector that is vital to Pakistan’s clean energy future.”
Public Advisory from PSA: We urge the general public and rooftop solar system owners to always follow approved engineering guidelines and safety standards for solar installations. The PSA recommends to adapt comprehensive and technical standards for: Rooftop load calculations, Anchoring and wind resistance, Use of certified structural materials, Professional installation by licensed vendors and periodic maintenance, ideally quarterly.
PSA appeals to all consumers to ensure proper inspection and reinforcement of existing structures and to consult certified professionals when installing solar systems.
Pakistan stands at the cusp of a solar revolution, and misstatements at such a sensitive time can hamper the nation’s progress toward energy security and sustainability. We request all media outlets and government representatives to present factual, data-backed information and avoid creating unnecessary fear around solar technology.
