Pakistani filmmakers have a new opportunity to showcase their creative work on the international stage as Alternativa Film Festival 2027 officially opens submissions for its fourth edition. Backed by inDrive, the nomadic film festival will take place in Africa in late 2027, bringing together impactful cinema and emerging filmmaking talent from across the Global South.

The festival is inviting feature-length films from Pakistan, other Asian countries, Africa and Latin America. With a total prize fund of $120,000, free submissions and international exposure, the upcoming edition offers filmmakers an opportunity to connect with global audiences and industry professionals.

Submissions will remain open until March 1, 2027, giving filmmakers several months to prepare and submit their work.

Alternativa Film Festival 2027: A Global Platform for Pakistani Filmmakers

Alternativa Film Festival is part of Alternativa, a non-profit film initiative founded by Arsen Tomsky, Founder and CEO of inDrive, the global mobility company known for its commitment to challenging injustice through fair choices.

The initiative aims to support filmmakers from regions that often face barriers to international distribution and recognition. Through its festival and distribution activities, Alternativa seeks to bring compelling stories from the Global South to wider audiences.

Commenting on the initiative, Arsen Tomsky highlighted the unequal opportunities filmmakers face when trying to reach international audiences.

He said exceptional filmmaking can emerge from anywhere, but access to global audiences remains restricted by an unequal system. He added that Alternativa Distribution was established to address this imbalance by bringing carefully selected films from the Global South to wider audiences.

Liza Surganova, Head of Alternativa, said the festival continues to expand its reach, scale and connections with each edition. She invited filmmakers from across the Global South to share their stories and become part of an expanding international filmmaking community.

International Exposure and Opportunities Beyond the Festival

For Pakistani filmmakers, participating in Alternativa Film Festival 2027 could open doors to international recognition, industry networking and new distribution opportunities.

Directors whose films are selected for the Competition will be invited to attend the festival and awards ceremony. The organizers will cover their travel and accommodation expenses, making international participation more accessible for selected filmmakers.

The festival also aims to extend opportunities beyond the competition through Alternativa Distribution, a non-profit distribution label launched in summer 2026.

The platform focuses on bringing impactful cinema from the Global South to audiences worldwide. This initiative provides an additional pathway for selected films to reach viewers beyond their countries of origin.

Previous Edition Highlights Growing Global Interest

The previous edition of Alternativa Film Festival took place in Medellín, Colombia, where it received 1,831 submissions from 55 countries across Asia and Latin America.

The response demonstrated growing interest in impact-driven storytelling and highlighted the diversity of filmmaking talent across participating regions.

The upcoming African edition is expected to further strengthen the festival’s international network and create new connections between filmmakers, audiences and industry professionals.

A New Opportunity for Pakistan’s Film Industry

The opening of Alternativa Film Festival 2027 submissions presents an important opportunity for Pakistani filmmakers seeking international exposure and wider recognition.

With free registration, a $120,000 prize fund and additional distribution opportunities, the festival provides a platform for creative voices to reach audiences beyond national borders.

Pakistani filmmakers working on feature-length fiction, documentary, animation or hybrid productions can explore the submission requirements and apply before the March 1, 2027 deadline.
