Islamabad ( ) Federal Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Malik has said that 40 million people in Pakistan have been affected by climate change, with displacement, disabilities and entire settlements destroyed. In the last five floods in Pakistan, six thousand people have died and nineteen thousand people have been disabled and injured as a result of disasters. All these individuals have been deprived of supporting their children and parents. These are all unnamed stories and do not fall under any migration account. During a single heatwave in Pakistan, five hundred people died in a city.
He expressed these views while addressing a ceremony organized on the occasion of the formal launch of the Civil Society Alliance on Migration (C-SAM), an alliance of more than 50 civil society organizations for safe and dignified migration in Pakistan.
The event was attended by the Canadian High Commissioner, IOM, Overseas Employment Corporation, civil society leaders from across the country, and a large number of people.
Addressing the ceremony, Federal Minister Musadik Malik said that Pakistan contributes less than one percent to global pollution but we are paying its price. Due to the last few floods, people have been displaced, which the world does not even recognize as migration.
IOM Head of Program Darius Pamparas said that civil society is closest to communities and that is its strength. Every organization sees a part of the migration journey, and that is the gap that C-SAM has been created to fill.
C-SAM Chairman Mubarak Ali Sarwar said that the real value of this alliance will not be measured by today’s ceremony but by our joint action after today.
OEC MD Nasir Khan Kashani said that evidence is essential for good policy, civil society can help in policy-making by bringing facts from the field.
The secretariat of C-SAM is based at OxDev Initiative Islamabad. It has technical support from IOM and financial support from Canada.
